Spotlight Review: Don’t Let Your Catholic Guilt Make You Miss It
While Spotlight is an unnerving and devastating film at times, it celebrates the hard work of investigative journalists through a smart script and strong performances that overall, make for a very emotionally resonant experience. The film, directed and co-written by Tom McCarthy, is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage by a group of journalists at the Boston Globe. Beginning in 2001, the group of journalists at the Globe known as the Spotlight team were tasked with investigating a potential cover-up of local priests being shifted around to different parishes because of accusations of sexual abuse on children. As they dig deeper, they discover that these actions by the local religious…

Plan, Execute, Measure
A Guide to Social Networking for Small Businesses BY LAURA McREYNOLDS For small businesses, it can be difficult to maintain an online presence. Although most small businesses lack a dedicated communications team, Chris Conrath, a teacher in Centennial College’s Corporate Communications program, explains that small businesses maintain an advantage over corporations because they are part of a community. So how can you exercise this advantage in your business? 1. Plan The first step in any social media endeavour is to plan. The purpose of having a presence on social media is to bring customers in to your store. To do this, set goals for what you hope to achieve. How…

Café Review: Goat Coffee Co.
“Sex, drugs, & rock n’ roll Just coffee for me, thanks!” Such reads one of the many quirky invitations chalked onto the sidewalk sign outside of Centennial Collegecampus around the corner, Goat Coffee has easily become my go-to spot in Pape Village. Not only does the vintage-styled lighting call to me, but also the interior atmosphere of wood and red brick, which commands me to pull up a chair and borough into my books for the next hour. Local couple Anna and Damian Michaelidis, who opened the café this passed October, can frequently be found behind the espresso bar. Damian’s excitement for the joint is clear; he offers menu suggestions…

Healthy and Delicious Planet
Go Green and Get Healthy at Healthy Planet! By Meghan Gribben I have stopped by Healthy Planet on the Danforth a few times since I have started at Centennial College. There aren’t many great food places near the school; there’s mainly fastfood joints with few vegetarian options. Healthy Planet, though, is local, convenient, and healthy. Healthy Planet is a grocery store as well as an eatery. Specifically, they sell “vitamins, supplements, health, and beauty” products. They are committed to healthy foods and a greener environment. They only deal with socially responsible manufactures and distributors. This is the kind of grocery where you can get coconut oil, kale chips, and an organic juice smoothie—all…

Degrassi High: Where are they now?
A few words with Dayo Ade by Stacey Philipp Centennial College’s Centre for Creative Communications is not just a place of education, but the setting of the 1980’s television show Degrassi High. While the show took on such issues as teen dating, suicide, depression, bullying, drugs, eating disorders, abortion, and more, a fan base of loyal viewers continues to grow, making this show one of the most popular televised teen dramas filmed in Canada. Degrassi High was filmed just north of Danforth Avenue at Centennial College in Toronto from 1989–1991. Watching reruns of the beloved characters like Joey (Pat Mastronianni), Snake (Stefan Brogren), and Wheels (the late Neil Hope) aim…
