People Love El Pipil!

El Pipil 1 - exterior25 Years of Spectacular Style, Sales, and Smiles

By Kaavya Sivakumaran

The arrival of spring means two important things: sunshine and toasty temperatures are creeping up on us, and it’s the perfect excuse to make some fashionable additions to our warm-weather wardrobes.

“Yellow will be in during the fall season,” says Betsy Papachristou, owner of El Pipil, a chic and charming women’s boutique at Danforth and Broadview.

The Danforth became home to El Pipil when a relative of a relative of Betsy’s opened the store 25 years ago. After 18 years of owning it herself and developing a relationship with the area and its residents, she says, “we have a really good customer base in the neighbourhood, and people know us…[some of them] have been coming here for years, and we’re seeing them over different parts of their life.” Read more

Five Handy Tips for Finding Great Garments While Thrift Store Shopping

By Kiley Bell

1. Inspect Carefully

It’s important to keep in mind that just because an item is cheaper in thrift stores than it normally is elsewhere, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a great find. Be sure to inspect each garment carefully, looking closely for broken zippers, stains, discolouration, loose threads, and rips. Loose threads can easily be fixed with a quick stitch, but large tears may not be worth the time or money it takes to repair. Don’t base the quality on a missing button either; often, old shirts can look better with a set of new buttons.

Fitness is Fashionable

Wearing workout wear as casual wear in the ‘80s and today.

by Lauren Sena

From the 1980s to today, it seems that no matter what the fashion trends are, women find a way to incorporate workout wear into their everyday outfits. With the aerobics craze of the ‘80s, leg warmers, off-the-shoulder shirts, and tracksuits were stylish whether or not they were worn for exercise. Today, with gym-goers choosing workout attire based on comfort and technical features, the yoga pant has become common for exercise, as well as daily activities. While the trends have significantly changed, the line between gym wear and street wear continues to be blurred.

Leg Warmers

In 1981, the world’s first aerobic exercise video debuted. Aerobicise  displayed beautiful women exercising in colourful leg warmers and high-cut body suits. Its television (and Canadian) counterpart: 20 Minute Workout did the same thing. While both productions may have been better known for their sexuality rather than the actual workouts (an excess amount of shots from behind leads me to believe this), they nevertheless influenced workout wear. Diva Dancewear explains that leg warmers were originally worn by dancers to prevent muscle cramps and injuries. Aerobicise and 20 Minute Workout, however, turned them into a fashion statement. Jane Fonda’s workout videos and Olivia Newton-John’s song “Physical” also propelled this trend forward. Aside from wearing leg warmers for exercise, women wore them in public with tights, jeans, and miniskirts.

Off-the-Shoulder Shirts

Pop culture was infused by the exercise craze, and its influence on fashion was unavoidable. The movie “Flashdance” started the off-the-shoulder trend with shirts, as worn by the main character who was an aspiring dancer. This trend quickly became a part of workout wear, and then casual wear. These shirts were layered over tank tops and smaller shirts, and worn with leggings, tight jeans, or miniskirts, according to nostalgic website Like Totally 80s. This trend has re-emerged in today’s fashion and is popular again as a casual trend.

Tracksuits

Tracksuits, especially those made from nylon, transitioned from being athletic warm-up gear to leisurewear in the 1980s for both women and men. Their plain designs were updated during this decade to be more decorative and fashion-forward. This trend of designers creating tracksuits as casual wear rather than as workout wear remains today. These tracksuits are comfortable, like those worn for athletics, but do not have the qualities that make them suitable for workouts. Juicy Couture’s velour and jewel-embellished tracksuits come to mind; their brand being described as “best known for ascending the tracksuit to its status as a casual luxury icon.”

Yoga Pants

Yoga pants were once specific to the workout, but are now worn for exercising in general. Today, it has become common for women to wear them for multiple occasions. While some people think this is a big fashion “don’t”, the comfort and ease of wearing yoga pants while out-and-about can’t be denied. Pairing them with boots or a cute jacket can take them from being workout wear to casual attire. Brands such as TNA  intentionally design their pieces to be easily adaptable from running on the treadmill to running errands. Their TNAction line uses antibacterial and fast-drying fabric accented with street wear elements, which makes it easy to integrate these pieces into your everyday wardrobe. Similarly, sweaters and pants made by lululemon are frequently sported by Canadian women outside of the gym. Warm hoodies meant to be worn pre- and post-workout, and stretchy, breathable yoga pants have made the company’s technical athletic apparel a favourite among college and university students.

As long as women enjoy being comfortable during their day-to-day activities, the trend of wearing workout wear as casual wear will remain. To purchase fitness clothing (whether or not you plan to wear these pieces for working out), visit:

Hits, misses, and spring trends at the 84th Academy Awards

by Ashley Kowalewski

With the awards season coming to an end, spring is just around the corner. And what better way to kick off the season than to see the hits and misses of the 84th Academy Awards and which celebrities were following this year’s spring trends.

One of the hottest spring trends this year is the use of light pastels, creams and whites—and the stars loved this trend on the red carpet.

Octavia Spencer

Cameron Diaz

Gwyneth Paltrow

White Tom Ford gown, photo by Jason Merritt, Hollywood, CA, 2012.

They all wore gowns that were more form-fitting. Even though the colours were all neutral, each celebrity wore a gown that had a little something different to make them stand out.

Following suit with the light colours that this spring embraces, these stars also chose lighter fabrics for their gowns, keeping the popular flowing trend by employing Grecian and tunic-style gowns.

Melissa McCarthy

These starlets all had a light-as-air look to them as they walked down the red carpet, adding a little more colour to the pastel spectrum.

Although metallics are usually more of a fall/winter style, shimmery fabrics have definitely made their mark with this season’s hottest trends.

Meryl Streep

Stacy Kiebler

Both these women glistened in gold, resembling the coveted trophies everyone was there to see. They wore this timeless trend perfectly and reminded everyone of the sunshine that is sure to come.

Free-flowing fabrics, light pastels, and glimmering metallics are some of the most classic spring fashion trends, but as these celebrities have shown, you can always try something a little different. Whether you’re going to the office or to lunch, using any of these trends will make your wardrobe red-carpet ready.

The best sites for the Fashionable DIYer

by Megan Patterson

In the last few years, Do It Yourself (DIY) projects and crafting have become extremely popular. Maybe it has to do with the recession, maybe it has to do with people’s love for saving money, and maybe it has to do with people wanting unique things. The internet is awash with tons of great sites full of chic and easy craft projects. Here are some of my favourites:

Casey Valiant, Evansville, 2009.

Grosgrain

Grosgrain has it all–knitting, clothes, accessories, and even some decorating projects. It’s also a really good resource if you want to take something basic you already have and make it into something new and unique.
Favourite projects: Ribbon willies, any of the “Embellish your Knit” projects

Ravelry

I’m not a knitter, but I know a lot of people who do. They swear by this community for finding patterns. You have to sign up to see any of the projects, but it’s free to join.
Favourite projects: None for this one, because I couldn’t look at anything without having to sign up, but there is indeed an entire section of patterns

P.S. I Made This

This site takes inspiration directly from the runways. It has also been made into a book with the same name.
Favourite projects: Feathered skirt, lace chunky knit

Honestly…WTF’s DIY section

This one is probably one of my favourites. Also very high fashion inspired, but much more prolific than P.S. If you saw something you liked on the runways, you’ll probably find it here. It includes both clothing and accessories.
Favourite projects: DIY Miu Miu sneakers, DIY sleeveless trench

Studs and Pearls

This site is particularly great for DIY jewellery and accessory projects.
Favourite projects: Turban headband, studded sleeve hoodie

I Spy DIY

This is another great site for jewellery projects in particular. The author, Jeni, has also been featured on The Today Show, and in InStyle magazine.
Favourite projects: Rhinestone and threaded hoop earrings, colour block clutch.

Required 2 Be Inspired

Natasha is Canadian, and her site, which is also a personal style site, has a lot of great projects on it. The best part is that she usually wears them in her posts, so you can see how they look in the wild. You do have to be a decent seamstress for many of the clothing projects, but there are also a large number of great accessories ones too.
