Losing Your Voice in the Chair

Simple tips to help you stay clear of a regrettable ‘do.

by Rachel Power

Many of us have been there.  We go to a new salon with a vision of what we want to look like when we leave, only to leave disappointed – or worse, in tears.

So how did it come to this?
You did your homework. You searched around your neighborhood and found a reputable looking salon. You assume, like most people, that if you go to a professional salon, you will leave with professional results.  If only it were that simple! There are so many roadblocks that can stop you from arriving at hair bliss.

Male or female, your appearance and self-esteem go hand in hand.  Not liking how you look can negatively affect so many aspects of your day-to-day life.   A bad haircut or colour can leave you feeling angry, depressed, and unattractive.  You can’t rewind the clock, but you can learn ways to prevent this from happening to you again.
Here are some simple tips and guidelines to follow to help you stay clear of a regrettable ‘do.

Take a Tour
Before you put your beautiful locks in the hands of a stranger, tour the salon.  Make sure that the standards are high.  Is it clean? How do the stylists look? If the salon is less than spotless, leave.  How can you trust your esthetic to a salon that does not even respect its own?

Take Inventory
Take note of the products offered, are they up-to-date?  Are the posters and magazines from 3 years ago?  Just like any other industry, there are advancements in hair care all the time.   If the salon is still using ’80s techniques like caps for highlights… run!

A Cold Connection
Your stylist needs to understand exactly what you want. Every appointment should start with a 10-minute consultation.  Explain yourself clearly, ask questions and make sure your stylist explains all the steps in the process clearly to you.   Don’t lose your voice and allow yourself to be rushed.  If the lines of communication are not open, do not proceed.

Trust your Gut
You are more intuitive than you know!  The last thing you want to say after a horrible haircut is “I knew this was going to happen”.  If you have a bad feeling about the appointment, be honest with your stylist about it. Tell them you are not 100% comfortable and reschedule for another day or with another stylist.

Sadly, there is no governing body to regulate salons.  Anyone can open a salon and call him or herself a Master Stylist.  This means it is up to the consumers to be honest about their experiences and share their opinions with as many people as possible, good and bad.  If you see a fabulous head of hair walking down the street, don’t be afraid to ask what salon they go to.  Most people will be flattered and happy to share their stylists’ details.

These tips may not guarantee a lifetime of bouncing out of a salon with a grin from ear to ear, but they should help to minimize the risk of leaving with tears running down your face.

Recommended products: Revlon Colorburst in Cherry Ice, CoverGirl Lip Perfection in Hot, and L’ Oréal Paris Colour Riche in British Red.

Cat Eyes

The look: A flick of liner gives a retro feel, but don’t feel obligated to stick to black. Designers are using bold colours like beige, grey, and coppery orange on the runway.

Treat your tresses with ingredients found right in your pantry.

Is your hair feeling bogged down from all the products you use? Try this recipe for baking soda shampoo and vinegar conditioner. It’s an inexpensive way to keep your hair clean, and it gives natural shine while brightening your colour. As an added bonus, your hair will also be more manageable and dry faster!

Baking Soda Shampoo & Vinegar Conditioning Rinse

Shampoo
1/2 cup of baking soda
2 – 3 cups of warm water

Conditioner
1 Tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar or White Vinegar
1 Cup Water

  1. Combine the baking soda and the warm water in clean bottle. Old shampoo bottles work really nicely.
  2. In the shower, wet your hair as you normally would, pour the baking soda mixture all over your head, and massage it into your scalp.
  3. Rinse thoroughly. The mixture won’t foam up like traditional shampoo, and will feel rather gritty so you’ll want to make sure you get it all out.
  4. Pour the vinegar rinse through your hair, and let it soak in while you continue your regular shower routine.
  5. Rinse your hair. Don’t worry about it smelling like vinegar, it can be rather unpleasant while you’re in the shower, but the smell won’t stay in your hair.

Remember, every person’s hair is different so you may have to tweak the amount of ingredients you use. Your hair will not smell much like anything once the process is done; however, you can always spray some perfume into it. Unlike traditional shampoos and conditioners, baking soda and vinegar don’t contain harsh chemicals. If you continue to use this mixture you won’t need to wash your hair as often, and it will help control the oils in your scalp. Baking soda and vinegar are an easy and affordable alternative, and will undoubtedly change your hair care routine.

The Confidence Factor

Treat Yourself to a Pedicure

Heighten your confidence with a makeover on the Danforth

by Kaylynn Gaspar

Confidence plays a large role in a person’s overall level of self-esteem, so it is important to find quick and effective ways to spoil yourself in the convenience of your neighbourhood. You may be surprised at how these few simple aesthetic improvements can alter your overall look from head to toe. When you start to notice that your confidence is lacking due to self-neglect, the most important thing to remember is that you need to break the cycle and start spoiling yourself. I decided to spoil myself by going in for a reasonably-priced makeover on the Danforth!

For my makeover, I decided on the top-down approach: beginning with a complete hair transformation and ending with a quality pedicure. The places that I chose were very carefully selected because of their highly experienced staff members. For those of you who aren’t as adventurous about your looks, it’s reassuring to be under an experienced hand.

Start With Your Hair

Many women believe that attaining flowing hair is a great way to boost their self-esteem. It takes a good haircut to achieve a “wash-and-go” style that works with and without spending too much time in the mornings. For my hair transformation, I really wanted to keep my long hair, but just add shape and a fringe to keep it out of my face. With these visions in mind, I went to Salon Elias.

I had researched the location ahead of time and knew that Salon Elias’ stylists were very credible due to their close affiliations with TONI&GUY (the internationally recognized icon in hairstyling). I knew that Salon Elias could deliver a great haircut, at a price that I could accept as being reasonable (being formerly considered as having extra-long hair, I have to be wary of salons that will charge me extensively for a haircut). I booked an appointment with stylist George Vlahos, former Art Director at TONI&GUY in Toronto (http://tonyguy.com). Vlahos was extremely professional with his work, and I absolutely love the haircut he gave me. He complimented my features in relation to how he was cutting my hair, which made me feel confident that I would be happy with the result.

“It’s a great feeling knowing that somebody leaves your chair very happy, and they are a lot more confident than they were when they walked in,” Vlahos passionately states. “It totally completes your look.”

Pamper Your Feet

If there is one thing that makes me feel absolutely confident, it is when my feet are perfectly polished and smooth.  I chose Tina’s Pro Salon & Spa for my pedicure, and the customer service was exceptionally friendly. I had the chance to talk with a highly skilled employee named An (chinese name Yen). In the winter time, An gets tied up with appointments because many people get pedicures to maintain the health of their feet.

“In the winter you’re always wearing socks, which could lead to fungus,” warns An. “You walk every day, and pedicures are a nice way to relax.”

I also had a lower-leg massage included as a part of the pedicure, which lasted about ten minutes. After having gone several months without a pedicure, I was reminded of how important it is to get them done. Having this pedicure certainly served to boost my self-confidence, especially alongside my new haircut.

With my exceptionally soft hair and soft feet, I truly felt like my makeover on the Danforth helped to boost my overall confidence. Even if only temporary, it was still worth it! A head-to-toe makeover is a must for anyone who is suffering from a case of self-neglect. Always remember when you feel listless and low to take action and break the cycle! Your pretty hair and feet will thank you.
