Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is more than just eating right and getting exercise. It’s about taking care of yourself mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually in all aspects of your life. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, here are five quick tips to maintain a healthy lifestyle in dating and relationships.

1)      Drink in moderation on dates. Alcohol is high in calories and doesn’t help your waist line. Too much alcohol can also affect your long term physical health. It can also affect your emotional and mental health if you start making relationship decisions while under the influence. For example, if you’re not ready to move to the next level in your relationship, but agree because alcohol had lowered your inhibitions, you can end up feeling regret which can hurt your emotional well-being.

2)      Stay within your budget. Maybe you want to impress your date, or you don’t want to appear stingy. However, spending money you don’t have not only stresses your bank account, but can also stress your mind when you find that you needed that money for something more important.

3)      Practice safe sex. It’s really easy to forget to practice safe sex, but this is crucial to maintaining a healthy body. Safe sex doesn’t just include using condoms to prevent STIs, it also includes making sure you are in the right frame of mind. Entering into a physical relationship when you aren’t mentally or emotionally ready can cause you more problems later.

4)      Observe the red flags and warning signs. Listen to your inner voice when it tells you someone is wrong for you or that a situation feels wrong. Staying in a relationship where you aren’t comfortable can hurt your emotional health.

5)      Stay happy. Stay in relationships that make you happy. If your relationship is giving you more miserable days than happy ones, then it probably isn’t a healthy relationship. Only you can decide if a relationship is a good one or not.

In the end, the healthiness of a relationship depends on the two people involved. If you’re content with yourself and your relationship (in any form) then you’ve taken a great step towards a healthy lifestyle.
