    Street Style: Danforth Edition

By: Alexandra Davies March 2014: the official month of bipolar weather. As you all have probably noticed, March has stricken the Danforth with a couple warm days full of sunshine and smiles, but has also thrown us a couple curveballs. Just as our streets became slush-free, Mother Nature decided to hit us with one of the year’s fiercest snowstorms (thanks for that, by the way!). Despite this unexpected and totally unnecessary whirlwind of a blizzard, the people of the Danforth were still out there rocking some serious spring-inspired styles. The aftermath of the storm left the Avenue drenched in snow, but the people kept high hopes that spring is just…

    Street Style: Danforth Edition

By: Alexandra Davies March has finally arrived, and we all know what that means – it’s almost spring! With spring comes warmth, and with warmth comes cropped, fitted jackets, pretty floral prints, and footwear that doesn’t require protector spray to ward off any unwanted salt. As we all know, Canada takes its sweet time to shift into spring mode. Alas, as we wait for the season to finally “spring,” we are forced to drudge through the leftovers of the icy terrains and multiple snowmageddons that have struck our town these past few months. However, with the temperature (hopefully) on the rise, we have already spotted wintery looks incorporating some spring-inspired…

    Street Style: Danforth Edition

By: Alexandra Davies It has been a wild couple of weeks in the world of fashion. From New York, London, Paris, and all the way to Milan, the major Fashion Weeks are sweeping the globe with new and upcoming trends for the year ahead. We are seeing a major focus on florals, collared tops, fringes, metallics, graphic tee’s, and every shade of pink in the book. While exploring the Danforth, we have seen a couple of these trends already in full swing. One accessory in particular is making major waves nationally, and is probably easier to spot on the Avenue than a Greek restaurant. If you haven’t seen for yourself,…

    Street Style: Danforth Edition

By: Alexandra Davies Waking up and looking out the window to muddy snow, slushy sidewalks and blinding flurries leaves us all in a fashion quandary. We want to be practical, but that doesn’t have to mean we have to forgo our fashion. There are a couple of tricks to keep us in check, but my favourite is layering. Not only will you be extra bundled up,  mixing a casual top with a textured knit cardigan will always be in style. We may not be able to wish away the February chill, but the people of the Danforth have embraced the cold with cozy trench coats, sleek winter boots and more…

    Street Style: Danforth Edition

By: Alexandra Davies With the winter months in full swing, the icy temperature has certainly taken its toll on the Danforth. Arctic winds and frozen roads have left our town draped in snow. As the temperature plummets, it seems our fashion does, too. Layers and layers of bulky knits and puffer coats do not leave any room to show off your style. So, how does one pull off a warm outfit without sacrificing fashion? I bundled up and hit the Avenue in search of smart and stylish people who are braving the elements in this season’s hottest trends.     Name: Susan W. Wearing: Hat: Mountain Equipment Co-op Coat: Costa…

    People Love El Pipil!

25 Years of Spectacular Style, Sales, and Smiles By Kaavya Sivakumaran The arrival of spring means two important things: sunshine and toasty temperatures are creeping up on us, and it’s the perfect excuse to make some fashionable additions to our warm-weather wardrobes. “Yellow will be in during the fall season,” says Betsy Papachristou, owner of El Pipil, a chic and charming women’s boutique at Danforth and Broadview. The Danforth became home to El Pipil when a relative of a relative of Betsy’s opened the store 25 years ago. After 18 years of owning it herself and developing a relationship with the area and its residents, she says, “we have a…

    The Devil Can’t Afford Prada

Five Handy Tips for Finding Great Garments While Thrift Store Shopping By Kiley Bell 1. Inspect Carefully It’s important to keep in mind that just because an item is cheaper in thrift stores than it normally is elsewhere, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a great find. Be sure to inspect each garment carefully, looking closely for broken zippers, stains, discolouration, loose threads, and rips. Loose threads can easily be fixed with a quick stitch, but large tears may not be worth the time or money it takes to repair. Don’t base the quality on a missing button either; often, old shirts can look better with a set of new buttons.
