    Cooking Up a Community

Two days before this article was due, my husband, friend, and I were sitting at Mezes on the Danforth. We hadn’t planned to eat there—it was a last-minute, panicked decision when the other plan for my article fell through. I had changed the topic of this piece so many times that I had absolutely no clue what I was going to write, and decided that, if nothing else, we’d have a great meal at Mezes. I’ve been coming to Mezes for almost ten years after a friend and I did a quick “where should we eat on the Danforth” search in 2013. My husband and I even considered getting married…

Does The Danforth Have An Identity Crisis?

Nestled between a Starbucks and Holy Name Catholic Church is St. Irene Chrisovalantou Greek Orthodox Church. A former body shop, the space was converted into a church in 1974 in response to members of the Greek community who wanted a place to preserve their culture. However, you would literally miss it in a blink of an eye. “It’s always been off to the side,” said Katy Haralampidis, 42, whose Danforth experience started in the church. The church remains accessible to Greeks who live in the area; however, there is a string of disappointment in its lack of structural development over the years. “I remember going to play with my friends…

    The Burger: Greek Style

Greek turkey burgers with feta and red pepper By: Alexa Keeler Quite a departure from last month’s theme of tradition (where I made homemade souvlaki), this recipe is a modern Greek-inspired take on the burger, with old-style Greek ingredients. Not only is this dish simple to make with minimal ingredients, it packs a surprising amount of flavour for how unpretentious it is (no Himalayan Salt Brick required). Let’s begin!

    Ouzeri Estiatorio

Eating my way through Greek town By: Alexa Keeler Welcome! This corner of On the Danforth Online will document my exploration of authentic Greek cuisine; both restaurant-made and homemade. Traditionally, an ouzeria is a type of Greek tavern that serves Greek liquor and mezedes, which are small finger foods. Regardless of the modest satisfaction the name Ouzeri suggests, this restaurant is more of a humbling experience than a humble place. Possibly the most understated for its quality, Ouzeri presents some of the finest traditional Greek cuisine on the Danforth.
