Why You Should Go See Busty and the Bass at Danforth Music Hall

It was the end of summer 2018 in Kingston, Ontario. I was just about to start my fourth year of university and only a few of my friends were in the city already. The weather was finally starting to cool down after the grueling summer months and we wanted to do something fun before the essays we were bound to ignore started to pile up.

I was living near the water at the time and we saw posters for a music and beer festival called “Fall for Kingston” at a small park near my place. It was only around ten dollars to go so we thought: why not? The music might not be our usual taste but at least we could sit back with a couple drinks and enjoy the night. It wasn’t very busy when we got there, which gave us the opportunity to find a cozy spot. The music was chill and slow so we took the time to talk.

Once that act was over we definitely felt the mood change. A lot of people started moving towards the front and the announcer was pumping up the crowd. The first person I saw hit the stage was the lead singer, Nick Ferraro, in an all-white outfit.

My first thought? These guys look cool.

The rest of the band got on stage and we were starting to get curious about all the instruments being brought out: sax, trumpet, trombone along with the usual “fixins.”

It’s been too long to remember what they played first, but I imagine it was one of their songs like “Up Top,” and we couldn’t believe we’d stumbled upon a concert like this. Trust me, I’m not a dancer. I don’t dance. But Busty and the Bass’ electro-soul will not let you stay sitting down.

Although this festival was called “Fall for Kingston,” I definitely fell for Busty and the Bass instead. This Montreal-based band has insane stage presence—even on a lawn in a small park in Kingston, I felt like I was at a stadium concert with the energy they had.

Their music is full of soul and magic. The synchronicity between their instruments and their unique sound makes their concerts unforgettable.

Prepare yourself for their next concert at The Danforth Music Hall on March 6 by listening to their bops “Memories and Melodies”, “The Real” and their newest song “Baggey Eyed Dopeman.” As they always switch up their musical style, you can’t really go wrong with any of their albums; my personal favourites are the GLAM EP and their full album, Uncommon Good. You can also check the band out on YouTube. I’d recommend their stripped-down version of “Common Ground.”

You can buy tickets here, and for only $37.80, I don’t know what’s stopping you.

All I have to say is: you’re welcome.
