Samantha Meiler

Web Designer

With an eye for creativity and a vision for design, Samantha Meiler is part of a duo web design team working to create, maintain, and beautify OnTheDanforth.ca. Sam’s favourite part of the job is “playing around with colours and layouts,” and as you can tell, she’s pretty darn good at it!

Chatting with Sam…

On The Danforth: What is the last book you read? Did you like it? Dislike it? Why?
Sam Meiler: The last book I read was The Poisoner’s Handbook, which I LOVED. It’s set in New York in the early 1900s and chronicles the history of the New York Medical Examiner’s Office. Each chapter focuses on a different poison—arsenic, cyanide, carbon monoxide, mercury, etc.—and reads like case studies of different notable poisonings, both criminal and accidental. It was morbid and fascinating at the same time, and I would recommend it to everyone.

OTD: Tim Hortons, Second Cup, or Starbucks? Why? What’s your favourite drink to order?
SM: I hate to admit it but Starbucks. I like to get a Vanilla Latte or just black peppermint tea. If I’m at Second Cup, I like London Fogs. Yum.

OTD: If you could trade places with anyone for one week, who would it be and why?
SM: I’d want to be someone independently wealthy so that I could travel and donate a bunch of money to charity and educational programs.

OTD: What would we find in your refrigerator?
SM: I’m still getting used to the concept of shopping for myself, so my refrigerator is kind of sparse. I usually have some milk, water, random fruit, and yogurt. My freezer is a different story, because my mum keeps giving me food that I haven’t had a chance to eat yet, so it’s stuffed.

OTD: Why do you think manhole covers are round?
SM: Manhole covers are round because manholes are round. It’s probably something to do with it being easier to drill a cylinder into the ground than trying to carve a rectangular hole.

What is Sam going to do in the future?

Keep a lookout for this creative talent because after graduating, she’s hoping to find a job in design, either in books, magazines, or online content.
