Warm Weather for Winter: Five Summer Pieces You Can Still Wear Now

It’s that time of year again. We’ve lost an hour of sun, our breath is becoming visible outdoors, and you’re hitting delivery on your Domino’s order lest having to leave the warm enfolding of your apartment. Your skin gets all dry, your hair gets staticky, and your wardrobe quickly morphs into mounds of greys and neutrals. I know. I feel you. I am you. But let me tell you, it doesn’t have to be this way. Those light and flowy pieces that made you feel some kind of way during the warm summer months need not be retired so soon. With a little imagination, here are five items from your summer wardrobe that you can transform into winter wear, for those days you just need a little more sun.

The Slip Dress
What was once a sweaty-day-staple is now your new favourite layering piece. Throughout the summer months, we loved our slip dress for its easy, breezy completeness. With its barely-there vibe and facilitation of unconstrained airflow, it was our go-to for those plus 40 days when we just couldn’t be bothered. But wait! Just because the heat’s been beat doesn’t mean we have to say “till next time.” On those chillier, late autumn days, just pair with a tight-fitted turtleneck and those adorable ankle boots you bought on sale in May. Not only will you be all comfy cozy, but you’ll have a look that will keep you chic from your morning coffee to your evening martini.

The Boho Blouse
Often paired with jean cut-offs and beachy waves, the boho blouse was hitting all kinds of trends this past summer. Whether yours is of the cold shoulder variety, tasseled and fringed, or still smells of day three of Way Home, there remains a place for this piece in your cold weather roster. Throw on a pair of dark, distressed denim with a dreamy, thick-knit cardigan for a most eclectic ensemble. Add your favourite loafers for those daytime adventures, sipping something pumpkin spice and Instagraming those first frosty leaves.

The Jean Skirt
Much like a hot toddy on a nippy night, the jean skirt is a true classic. Not only are you wearing one in your sixth grade class photo, but you went out and bought one this summer when all things 70s and denim came back in full boogie. And don’t you worry, your past season investment is as versatile as it is timeless. Where once you wore it with knotted tees, broken-in sneakers and your Jays snapback, you can now try it with a darker chambray button-up, oxfords and a cute, colourful toque. Add a jean jacket for triple denim points, sending the message that you are here, living your best life.

The Bandana
Much like the jean skirt, the bandana is one of fashion’s most versatile trends. While in July it was perfect for taming your instantly regrettable summer bangs, now you can wear it as a unique twist on everyone’s other favourite trend: the choker. Just tie this bad boy—western style—around your neck and shrug on a suede jacket for optimal cool. For a more casual date night, match with your fave skirt and tucked in band tee for a look that says “go ahead, make my day.”

The Jumpsuit
A standard of “night out” attire, the jumpsuit has become the little black dress’ androgynous little sister. While this summer saw the rise of the statement one-piece, these convenient, yet oh-so-stylish garments are not to be hung up quite yet. Matched with a structured blazer and bold lip, your jumpsuit will be given new life, allowing you to continue feeling powerful and elegant at all your evening engagements. To wear during the day, try with a wool duster and flowy scarf for a quick ‘n easy get up that will have you looking fly on the fly.
