BY SABRINA PIGNATARO Last minute shopping is a yearly ritual for some of us, and a headache for everyone. If you have to go shopping on Christmas Eve this year, here are some ways to make it easier. Determine what you’re going to buy. Browsing stores looking for the perfect gift is a bad idea at this point; your goal now is to get in and out of the mall with minimal bloodshed. If you can’t think of what to buy, you might have to rely on more impersonal gifts like ornaments, wine, gift baskets, or jewellery. Otherwise, start looking online for merchandise the person you’re buying for might like…

4 CanLit Books for your Reading List

BY SHRUTI J If you’re a fan of Canadian literature, you have likely heard of Bear by Marian Engel. First published in 1976 by McClelland and Stewart, the Governor General’s Literary Prize winning novel has recently been in the news because of a reissue. The book has also gained popularity worldwide as a result of an Imgur post expressing shock at the risqué story of a young woman’s love (both physical and emotional) for, you guessed it, an actual bear. Regardless of whether you view Bear as an iconic piece of Canadian literature or merely a tale of an unusual fetish, it has undoubtedly made its mark upon the field.…

FIFA Women’s World Cup, Coming to Canada

Canadian women’s soccer team gears up to make history in 2015 BY ANDREW DEWEY   The FIFA World Cup is one of—if not the—largest sporting events in the world. Countries from every continent (save Antarctica) compete for years in grueling qualification matches to narrow down the 196 countries to just 32. In 2014, we experienced another incredible tournament full of highs and lows, and for a brief couple of weeks it brought the world together. My best friend and I weren’t really given a choice in the matter of our relationship. Our mothers were best friends and therefore we thought we must be as well. We are different in almost every way imaginable, and if we had met today, we…

    Toronto Comicon’s Festivus Holiday Sale

BY SABRINA PIGNATARO Yesterday, Toronto ComiCon put on a small, one-day comic convention. For only $10 (and free for kids under 12), guests could enter the convention floor in Hall F of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre’s South Building. The “Festivus Holiday Sale” prides itself as the largest one-day comics show in Canada, with 2,500 guests in 2013. Unlike the massive fall event Fan Expo, the December convention is a lot more low-key, with fewer special guests, no panels, and a much smaller space. Fan Expo, on the other hand, takes up the entire South Building and part of the North Building. [pullquote]No convention would be complete without the presence…
