Harry Potter and the Love of Re:Reading

Appreciating used copies of a favourite book series with tips for defeating the Dark Lord By Leah Morrison Getting kids of all ages to love reading can be difficult in this age of distractions. But Christopher Sheedy, owner of Re:Reading (548 Danforth Ave.) knows how to connect with every one of them. In his shop, not only will you find a well-stocked children’s section (practically unheard of in used bookstores) but also a young and helpful staff who are incredibly knowledgeable about books for kids and young adults. Tasting Teas at Tsaa

The quaint little teashop that could is keeping locals warm this winter By Jaaron Collins Walking into Tsaa Tea Shop, I’m greeted with a smile and a friendly “hello!” This unique tea oasis has quickly become my favourite place to relax on the Danforth.  Tsaa has been a part of the Danforth community for four years and seems to be quite the busy place. With its hot drinks, delicious food, and welcoming staff, it’s no surprise I’ve never seen it empty. From warming up with a mug of specialty tea (in interesting flavours of oolong, green, black, white and herbal teas) to enjoying gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian meal options, Tsaa…

    Quest for the Fest

Interview with Piers Handling, Director and CEO of TIFF What’s it like to be the head honcho of Toronto’s biggest, most glamorous, and most highly anticipated arts festival of the year? Holding this position for nearly twenty years now, Piers Handling oversees TIFF’s programming and multi-million-dollar operating budget. He travels far and wide to select films for both the festival and for the TIFF Bell Lightbox year-round. I was fortunate enough to speak with him about both his job and the fall festival—and he threw in an interesting little tidbit: he lives just off the Danforth, and he says it’s a wonderful neighbourhood! How do the staff at TIFF spend…

    Goodbye (Again)

…But We’ll Be Back! Sadly, it has come to that point in the year where On the Danforth Online goes on an extended hiatus. Our staff, the students at Centennial College’s Book & Magazine Publishing program, must move on to other exciting projects. Our Spring and Summer print issues will be coming out over the next few months, so keep on the lookout for those! If you don’t see them around the neighbourhood, don’t worry, we’ll be posting them here too. More good news: OTD.ca will return with a whole new crew this winter.

    Old-World Pizza on the Danforth

Review of Pizzeria Libretto By Anoja Muthucumaru I have the good luck of reporting a taste bud-altering encounter with pizza at Pizzeria Libretto. Pizzeria Libretto is an Italian inspired restaurant that opened on the Danforth November 2011. The atmosphere is friendly with an air of laid-back sophistication. The restaurant is packed with regulars like local families, professionals, and students, so seating is limited. The open kitchen anchors the dinning area with two Naples-made wood burning stoves at the back. The centre of the pizzeria is packed with seating and comfortable red booths at the far right. There is an espresso and wine bar to the left.

    People Love El Pipil!

25 Years of Spectacular Style, Sales, and Smiles By Kaavya Sivakumaran The arrival of spring means two important things: sunshine and toasty temperatures are creeping up on us, and it’s the perfect excuse to make some fashionable additions to our warm-weather wardrobes. “Yellow will be in during the fall season,” says Betsy Papachristou, owner of El Pipil, a chic and charming women’s boutique at Danforth and Broadview. The Danforth became home to El Pipil when a relative of a relative of Betsy’s opened the store 25 years ago. After 18 years of owning it herself and developing a relationship with the area and its residents, she says, “we have a…

    Art On The Danforth

Artisans at Work: New Gallery and Studio Space By Amanada Kirsten Grant With its floor-to-ceiling art displays, custom-made jewellery case, and welcoming atmosphere, you would never guess Artisans at Work only opened two months ago. Already Tara Shelton and Lorraine Cheng have gathered together unique, local artists to display their work in the gallery. For more than ten years, Tara Shelton has been searching for a place on the Danforth to not only showcase her own jewellery but also bring together members of the community to share their arts and passions. When she finally found the place she had been looking for, Tara invited the Danforth community to join her…

    Re: Turn to Re: Reading

Your Friendly Neighbourhood Bookstore By Venetia Bodanis “There’s a large portion of the community that still wants to hold a book,” says Re: Reading owner Christopher Sheedy. “I don’t think people will ever get sick of having a book.” Boasting cheap secondhand books and movies that are still in good condition, Re: Reading is considered a staple store on the Danforth despite being open only four years. “It’s one of the few places in Toronto everyone else comes to; they do the Danforth and they go to the beach,” says Sheedy about the location. “This is just one of those neighbourhoods.”
